4 Kids Detained on Children’s Day; Berkin Elvan Protest During Event
4 children were detained by security forces when they held a banner that read “Berkin Elvan is Immortal” during a Children’s Day celebration in Istanbul.
Celebrations took place around Turkey on the National Sovereignty and Children’s Day, which marks the foundation of Turkey’s Parliament in 1920. One of the locations was Feshane in Istanbul, where Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu appeared on the stage to hand awards to a number of students.
4 young students held a banner that read “Berkin Elvan is Immortal”, and chanted slogans to protest the governor, and demanded justices for the boy died as a result of his long-lasted head injury caused by a police gas canister.
The young students were detained by the police on the spot. A DHA cameraman, Ünsal Çakın, was also attacked by a plain-clothes policeman for filming the police’s harsh detention.
